Considerations when upgrading to LEDs

We’ve all heard about the advantages of switching to LEDs for industrial lighting: lower energy usage, significantly longer bulb life, less heat buildup, and improved light colour among other benefits. You know what we’re talking about if you’ve ever been in an older facility lighted by sodium vapour lamps or other traditional lights. The hue of key things in the industrial environment is difficult to identify due to odd-looking, washed-out colours and overall poor light quality. However, there’s more to upgrading than the conventional factors.
The most important purpose is to get a higher return on the lighting investment. This is the financial rationale for the majority of customers. Other reasons for upgrading to LEDs, though, are listed below-
  • Excellent Technology: The most essential argument to switch to LED lighting is that it is more energy efficient. When an LED technology is turned on, it uses 80 to 90% of the electrical power to generate light while producing only 10 to 20% of the energy as waste heat. LED systems are graded A+ and A++ according to the European Commission’s energy efficiency requirements, with the latter being the most cost-effective. Additionally, some LED light versions are given the energy star badge, which denotes energy-efficient systems. LED lights are labelled with the following advantages: lower energy, maintenance, and cooling expenses; assured warranty; convenient features; and durability, according to the energy star standard.   • Longer replacement cycles: This benefit is the most important factor in the financial equation. There are extra advantages when it comes to maintenance. High-bay facilities have been suggested as a good candidate for switching to longer-life lighting. Where lift equipment is required, the cost of changing bulbs counts substantially in favour of longer-lasting LEDs.
  • A better in-use experience overall: This benefit refers to the time it takes to re-strike in the event of a power outage, as well as the time it takes to start lamps for the first time if they are not utilised 24 hours a day. Plus, there’s the question of whether or not the lamp will turn on this time. LEDs’ instant-on capabilities make them particularly appealing in this aspect.
Other Considerations 
We’ve gone over some of the benefits of switching to LEDs; now let’s look at some of the additional factors to consider while making the switch. If rewiring of lighting circuits is required, the computation is labour hours + out-of-pocket costs.
Lighting fixtures were frequently positioned near a junction box or where there was a convenient attachment point. If the original lighting plan needs to be changed to accommodate new lighting positions, rewiring is an option.
Photometric data may provide a clear image of the lighting distribution pattern for selected fixtures, as well as additional data such as footcandles of lighting power and lighting available at a specific axis to the fixture, thanks to the development of CAD tools geared to optimise lighting design. Photometric data is often delivered in the form of IES or Revit files, which are essentially ASCII-formatted distributions of light intensity that may be modelled in a lighting design (CAD) application. Many lighting fixture manufacturers provide these data or image outputs, allowing for a preliminary assessment of the impact of a re-lighting job.
Photometric data can provide a comprehensive picture of lighting performance if rewiring is required owing to faulty lighting location or other issues.
Some lighting companies will additionally design the lighting system to ensure that the lighting is distributed evenly.

Free up lighting circuits
In a new construction or major upgrades, more energy efficient LEDs can be included on a circuit. Thus requiring fewer lighting circuits for the same number of fixtures. Naturally, load calculations would needed to be performed but at 3-4 times the efficiency of traditional lighting. Fewer lighting circuits free up valuable panel space in load centers or distribution panels. For example, a typical 400W HID can be replaced with a 150W LED. Fixture providing the same amount of lighting output for roughly a third of the total current.
