BRAIDED WIGS TERMINOLOGY FOR BEGINNERS

Shoppers who want to try braided wig for the first time may run into some of the terminologies used in the braided wigs niche, and they can be a bit of a minefield for the inexperienced wig-buyer. Wording such as bald cap method, knot bleach, lace wigs, baby hair, glueless installation, mesh cap, ombre, lace front, full lace, closure lace, and the list goes on.

Below we’ll be explaining what each of these words means.

Bald Cap Method

A bald cap is a wig-like latex cap simulating the appearance of a bald or partially bald head. A bald cap is essential in the wig installation process because some people want to wear a wig without their natural hair getting in the way, so a bald cap is used to hide the natural hair for the wig can lay flat.

Knot Bleach

Refers to applying a bleaching product to the knots on the lace. A knot is each strand of hair hand-tied into the lace at the base of the wig cap. We use this process to lighten the knots, creating an illusion that matches the bald cap or scalp color, making it less detectable and natural in appearance.

Lace Wigs

Lace Wigs are made using several materials, including Lace, Silk, Thin Skin, or Monofilament. However, most lace wigs are constructed using French, Swiss, or stretch lace.

Baby Hair

Baby hair is short fine hair that grows along a person’s hairline. Many women of color with natural hair and coarser coils use a styling gel pomade to slick down their unruly baby hairs since that hair is usually a softer texture and shorter than the rest.

Glueless Installation

Glueless installation Is self-explanatory. It’s the process of installing a wig without applying glue around or underneath the wig cap like a toupee hairpiece.

Mesh Cap

A mesh wig cap is a base made of the net, which will help take your head’s shape. These are amazing because it never fails to mimic the shape of your head. As a mesh wig cap has small horizontal chambers, your hair gets easily attached to it. It is almost impossible to clip your wig properly to the cap without a mesh wig cap. That is why these wig caps are so popular among people who use wigs regularly.

Ombré

Ombré is the blending of one color hue to another, usually moving tints and shades from light to dark – ”excerpts from Wikipedia.”

Lace Front

Lace front wigs are one of the most natural-looking wig cap constructions available. An undetectable sheer lace front to your wig will create a natural-looking hairline. Lace front also allows you to style your wig away from your face without having to worry that the wig edge is visible. This type of wig construction is ideal for ladies who have experienced hair loss along the front hairline, as the invisible lace gives you the confidence to style your wig exactly how you want to. However, that’s not the case for braided hair wigs because tying your lace front hair in a ponytail may reveal the back mesh cap.

Closure Lace

Closure lace usually comes in 4 by 4, 5 by 5, or 6 by 6 inches in size and is used to close the front end of a wig. Closure lace for braided wigs has a breathable mesh cap.

So whenever you go to a salon and hear hairstylists using these terms, you already know what they are talking about.
