BEE Certification for light bulbs: How to get them

There was a time when electrical efficiency was the topic of discussion, light bulbs weren’t even remotely part of it. Those days are far gone. Nowadays, the concern of improving power efficiency is about every single electrical appliances. That’s why, for bulb manufacturers, it’s important to know about BEE certification. 

What is BEE certification?

After seeing the rapid of rise of electric power consumption, the government of India constituted a bureau. It then gave this bureau the responsibility to:

1. Promote innovation in the Electrical efficiency department
2. Providing venues for the manufacturers to develop electric efficient products
3. Granting star rating to the electric appliances – known as BEE certification – based on their power efficiency. 

BEE certification, the process to grant a product a star rating based on its electrical efficiency used to be an optional measure. However, with time and the rapid increase in power consumption, it was made mandatory for a list of electrical appliances that keeps on growing. A light bulb is just another edition of it. 

What is the BEE certification process for a light bulb?

Regardless of the type of electrical appliance, you need to follow the same steps to obtain star rating for your light bulb. 

1. BEE Brand Registration: The first step is to acquire brand registration for your company that BEE issues to certify that your brand is electrically efficient. 
   1. Go to the official BEE website
   2. Register as a new user
   3. Login and go to your dashboard
   4. Click and brand registration and proceed filling the application form
   5. Once filed, the application form will ask you to submit the brand registration fees. 
   6. Submit and logout. 
2. BEE Model Registration: Log back in to get to your dashboard. You’ll notice a new option called Model Registration. Select it and follow the steps below:
   1. Choose “light bulb” from the dropdown menu of the Product category. 
   2. Enter the model number. 
   3. Fill in the light bulb’s description. 
   4. Enter the power consumption details of the light bulb according to you. 
   5. Finally, press on submit. 

Note: In case you want to submit multiple models for star rating, before pressing submit click on the option of Add more. It will lead another form to Model application form to open. Enter the details and once you’ve entered the details of all the models for which you seek BEE certification, click on submit.

1. Take the printout of the application and mail it to the Bureau along with the requisite documents. 
2. The bureau, after receiving your application and the light bulb’s sample, will forward it to its in-house lab for efficiency testing
3. If the tests match with the lab results you’ve provided the Bureau, you will obtain BEE certificate. 

What are the documents required for BEE registration process?

For brand registration, you need to submit the following documents:

1. Trademark registration certificate
2. Details of the manufacturing plant
3. BIS certificate of the light bulb
4. QMS of the manufacturer
5. Small Scale Industry Certificate
6. Sample of the light bulb

For model registration, BEE requires the following documents from you:

1. Cover letter where you will state why you need the BEE certificate
2. Test report of the energy efficiency of the light bulb
3. A declaration letter stating that whatever information you have provided is correct
4. Sample of the light blub
