Women Are Becoming Climate Leaders Through New Online Courses
Women are becoming climate leaders by building online courses to help teach others about how to adapt and reduce their impact on the planet. As a social enterprise, The Women’s Institute for Leadership (WIL) is dedicated to developing women’s leadership skills and is actively educating women around the world.
WIL offers free online courses that teach women how they can take action in their daily lives to create a more sustainable future. The institute also offers paid courses where individual lessons are taught by experts across a variety of disciplines including energy, solar power, and food access. All courses include video lessons, group discussions, blogs posts and other materials as well as contact information should you need support or guidance moving forward with your projects.
What is WIL’s mission?
Our mission is to develop women’s leadership skills and to help them build a more sustainable future. We believe that women are innately more sustainable than men and want to create gender parity in the sustainability movement. The Institute for Women’s Leadership is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose “gender-smart” model causes people across the globe to view sustainability as beneficial for all humans, especially women.
What does WIL provide?
We provide free and paid online courses about topics ranging from solar energy for off-grid living, hydrogen energy, energy efficiency and workshops on the science of everyday life.
What is a social enterprise?
A social enterprise is a for-profit business that creates change in the world through its activities. WIL’s social enterprise model emphasizes environmental and gender equality. By creating a socially conscious business, we have the unique ability to create sustainable change where it needs to happen most – within developing countries.
What is the gender gap in sustainability?
Women are lacking in knowledge and skills when it comes to sustainable life and leadership. We believe that by providing the right information and resources, our gender-smart model enables women around the world to take action to create a more sustainable future for how to sell online courses. Currently, there are approximately 128 million women entrepreneurs worldwide, but only 7 percent of them own businesses focused on environmental protection or social contracting.
In addition, 88 percent of female entrepreneurs do not understand scientific processes that are essential to survival – such as solar energy – particularly for women living under oppressive regimes. We hope to close this entrepreneurial gender gap as we work together with individuals in developing countries around the world.
Who are the experts you’ve consulted with?
We have been developing our curriculum in collaboration with a diverse group of experts. From the environmental sciences to the food sciences and research on gender parity, we have enlisted partners from around the world. For example, we worked with scientists from all around the world at MIT and Harvard, who’ve taught us about energy and solar power for off-grid living.
what are the benefits of WIL’s online courses?
We are delighted to have over 1,000 women and men in over 130 countries hold our classes on solar energy, sustainable consumption and compostable dinnerware. Online learning is fast, interactive and easy – it’s one of the best ways to spread our message of gender parity.
How can I stay up to date on new features and information?
While we hope that you will come back very often for new course materials, we will also be offering several different ways to stay connected with the Institute for Women’s Leadership. Our social media platforms, as well as our website, will be regularly updated with course information and lesson updates. You can also follow us on Facebook or on Twitter.
